  1. Hi Joseph!

I agree with what you are saying. Esperanza grew up in a family owned ranch, El Rancho de las Rosas, in Aguascalientes. Therefore, she grew up in a wealthy (rich) family. Because she grew up rich, Esperanza views the poor different, and doesn't fully understand the situation of the poor. Even though she likes Miguel, who is the son of a housekeeper (Hortensia), she believes that they are separated from each other by a deep river (Pg. 18). This is a metaphor saying that the rich and the poor can’t be together. Also, Esperanza can be rude at times. She doesn't want to play, talk, share, or be around the poor. For example, she wouldn't let a little barefoot peasant girl play with her doll because the little girl is poor and filthy (dirty) (Pg. 69). Esperanza wouldn't get on the train because “the [poor] people [peasant] do not look trustworthy” (Pg. 67). However, Esperanza is not trying to do this intentionally (on purpose) because she was never in the shoe of a poor person. She was never in the shoe of a poor person is a phrase meaning that Esperanza was never a poor person. Therefore, she is not use to the low-class (cheap) things.

Good post Joseph! Keep up the good work!!! Let me know if you don't understand what I am saying.
